Waggling away potential
A comment I left over at Kotaku:
It isn’t really a “graphics vs gameplay” thing…or a “technology vs innovation” thing.
I was all excited about the Wii when it launched, because it seemed so new and “innovative”. But I ask you this: where’s the innovation? We’re a couple years into it now and not only is it not innovating anything, it appears to be bringing games back in time to the days of the Atari. (Seriously, these simple shovelware titles are no more complex than the crappy shovelware Atari games that caused that platform to crash and burn horribly.)
The few-and-far-between good games on the system are hardly innovative as they tend to fall into the “Zelda with added waggle” or “Mario with added waggle” categories (not to badmouth those games…they are indeed awesome). And my personal favourite aspect of the system — the virtual console — is literally nothing but old games re-released with nothing added to them, played with a SNES controller with added dualshock sticks for good measure.
The only real innovation this gen is happening on the 360 and PS3 and PC. It’s that simple. And I turn off the motion sensing on PS3 games whenever possible. Because it sucks.
